Do Galactagogues, Lactation Cookies, and Teas Really Work?

When you’re worried about milk supply, it’s natural to look for something quick and easy to boost it. That’s where galactagogues—foods, herbs, or medications thought to increase breast milk production—often come into the conversation. From “lactation cookies” to herbal teas and supplements, the options can feel endless. But do they actually help?

What Are Galactagogues?

“Galactagogue” is a term used to describe substances that are believed to promote lactation. They can be:

  • Herbal (such as fenugreek, blessed thistle, or moringa)

  • Pharmaceutical (prescribed medications, used in specific situations under medical guidance)

  • Food-based (like oats, flaxseed, or brewer’s yeast—often found in lactation cookies)

What the Research Says

While many families report feeling like galactagogues give their supply a boost, research shows mixed results. For some, these products may make a difference—but for many others, they may not have much effect at all.

What we know for sure is that the most effective way to increase milk supply is frequent and effective milk removal—nursing or pumping often and ensuring a good latch. Supplements alone can’t replace this foundation.

Common Types of Galactagogues

  • Lactation Cookies or Snacks → Usually made with oats, brewer’s yeast, flaxseed, or nuts. While nutritious, their milk-boosting power hasn’t been proven. Still, they can be a tasty, energy-boosting snack for tired parents.

  • Herbal Teas → Blends may contain herbs like fenugreek, fennel, or goat’s rue. These can be soothing and hydrating, but effectiveness varies.

  • Herbal Supplements → Capsules or tinctures of herbs like moringa or blessed thistle are sometimes recommended, but results can differ greatly from person to person.

  • Prescription Medications → Only used under medical supervision for specific situations.

Things to Consider Before Trying Galactagogues

  • Safety: Herbal supplements can interact with medications or cause side effects. Always check with your healthcare provider before starting anything new.

  • Root Cause: Low supply often has an underlying cause—such as latch difficulties, infrequent feeding, tongue tie, or medical conditions. Galactagogues won’t solve these on their own.

  • Support Matters Most: Skilled lactation support, along with a personalized feeding plan, is often the key to long-term success.

The Bottom Line

Lactation cookies, teas, and supplements may be helpful for some—but they aren’t a magic fix. The most reliable way to boost supply is ensuring your baby is removing milk effectively and often.

At Arizona Breastfeeding Center, our IBCLCs can help you uncover the root cause of supply challenges and create a plan tailored to your needs—whether that includes galactagogues or not.
